The Lyman family of Randel Wilcock Lyman designed and constructed The Padre Motel and have owned and operated the motel from its inception. Richard & Mary Lyman are the owners and proprietors of the Padre Motel. Richard & Mary were raised in Escalante, Utah and Boulder, Utah respectively. They both have significant firsthand knowledge of the history and lore of the surrounding area and its people. Your stay at The Padre Motel will be enriched by your conversations with them.
History "The Padre Motel" was named in honor of the Town of Escalante's namesake, Silvestre Vélez de Escalante. Father Escalante was a Spanish Padre who in 1776 took an expedition through the Rocky Mountains, the eastern Great Basin, and the Colorado Plateau. Escalante was originally known as "Potato Valley" because wild potatoes were found to be growing in the area. Members of John Wesley Powell's expedition recommended that the town and river be named Escalante in honor of the Padre and his explorations. Subsequently the Padre's name has been honored by the establishment of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in which The Padre Motel resides.
